[sticky entry] Sticky: Welcome to Lore Rising!

This is a community for sharing, discussing, and collaborating on creative ventures related to the Flight Rising browser game. Tell your clan's story, expand on Sornieth's lore, and leave feedback on other members' work!

Please keep our community rules in mind.

Be good to others. Disagreements happen everywhere, and arguments can happen without resorting to venomous personal attacks. If you're having unresolvable problems with another member, please contact a mod to work out a solution and/or keep us appraised of the situation. No harassment. No bigotry.

Place graphic or sensitive material behind a cut and visibly warn for it. This includes visual gore, detailed descriptions of physical injury, and commonly upsetting material like depictions of abuse. Unintentional slipups are understandable and will be acted on only to fix the error; repeated, blatant disregard for other members' comfort is a more serious issue.

No sexual content. Members under 18 are allowed on this comm; if it would violate a PG-13 rating, it can't go here.

Don't give anyone grief about their lore or headcanon. People have different preferences and takes on the world of FR - some lore will be serious, some comical. Some will be site-lore-compliant, and others will have speculative elements like shapeshifters or gijinkas or original Beastclan species. You aren't required to "share a universe" with anyone else's lore - if someone's "canon" doesn't match yours, let it be.

Please place large images, complex tables, or long stretches of text behind a cut. This is mostly up to discretion; the point is that certain kinds of content do funny things to the community layout, so tucking them behind a cut makes loading or scrolling through Lore Rising easier, especially for those on mobile browsers or slow computers. If your post is in serious need of a cut, no worries - you'll just be asked to snip it.

If you have a problem, please alert a mod. Community moderators on DW have controls that they can use to make communities secure spaces for their members; Lore Rising's mods are prepared to resolve disputes and preserve the community's integrity. Keeping us aware of problems before they go nuclear helps us help you.

Let's make Lore Rising a fun and pleasant place to be!

some fun "dragon #n and dragon #n+1" questions

All of these come from Lomedraug's Shiny New Questions Once a Day thread in Light Forums!

Dragons 3 and 7 from page 1 are now stuck in a cave far from the clans lands. Dragon 3 is injured and keeps insisting that 7 return to the clan and to leave them to their fate. 7 is insisting that they can fix 3's injuries despite it being obvious it's a fatal wound. Finally it comes down to 7 having to make a choice, return home with the possibility of getting help or remain and hope that they can heal 3 before enemy clans find them. Which do they pick?
There's an outbreak of Serthis Flu that's starting to affect dragons everywhere. The clan leader has fallen ill from the flu and it's up to dragons number 13 on page one to nurse them back to health. Tell about their methods in nursing.
Pick the fourth dragon on the first row of page two and the second dragon of row three on page one. What kind of adventure would they go on together?

Veron

Veron by talesofasmallwindclan.tumblr.com
Although many may see the Ashfall Waste as devoid of life other than the many dragon clans who reside there, flora and fauna persist in the environment. Many species of plants have come to rely on lava for reproduction, and with plants come animals. Of course there are many reptiles and small mammals that scurry along the rocks, but the largest mammal– other than beastkin– to reside even in the heart of the Ashfall Waste is the veron.

The veron is a species of mostly black cattle that live in ‘nomadic’ herds of as many as 50 adults. These large herds move continuously throughout the year; although they can be found in the Southern and central parts of the Ashfall Waste, wild herds are much more common in the North, occasionally wandering into the Shifting Expanse. “Domestic” herds kept by dragons are usually small and kept on a pasture– accompanied by a sole dragon, they risk wandering into enemy territory and being stolen.

The cattle are approximately the size of a tundra or pearlcatcher (4-6m) and typically the whole animal is utilized during a meal– although their hide may be saved for other purposes. Dairy production is a growing use for veron, but their meat is the primary reason dragon clans will raise them. Veron have no magical abilities are rely mostly on instinct rather than thought. Both magic and traditional methods can be used to assist in veron production– the animal pictured has had the rune of the clan that owns them seared into the hide. Although the vegetation of the Ashfall Waste is more plentiful than one would presume, it can still be difficult for a large herd of these animals to rely solely on plants, so they occasionally eat lizards and such.

They are fairly easy to tame and, because of their large size, tend to be slow-moving. Their large size also means that beastkin have not historically raised veron, and certain beastkin-allied dragon clans have begun to trade meat or dairy veron products with local beastkin. Veron have also begun to travel across Sornieth as native Fire dragons bring their homeland’s traditions when they move to distant clans.

The thick black hide worn by many veron was an adaptation to the fire and lava of their native environment, and with the transportation of these beasts to dragon lairs across Sornieth some have seemed to drop this trait in favor of a more colorful hide. Dragons interested in animal husbandry have started almost a sport of comparing the veron of different clans to see which is “superior”– as time continues, this has become more and more arduous. Dragons spend more and more time carefully grooming their selected animal.

The Ranch [Xander->Chirp on page 3 of my lair] which partners with Clan Buffelgrass was one of the first to raise veron on a large-scale and are currently selling pregnant cows and heifers to clans who wish to start raising their own meat.

Magical History: Latent Magic and Channeling

This little bit is partially in response to Meridok's which can be found here. Brought to you by the South Shore initiative for the perpetuation of the magical arts.

Magical Channels: The first age

Magic, much like all of the universes forces is constantly seeking stability and equilibrium. One way it achieves this is by channeling which is to say obtaining an element. In its natural state, magic exists as latent energy. This is by far, the most powerful state of magical energy, but it is also the most unstable by far. This is also the type of energy which the elemental spirits, the eleven, are composed of at their core. These entities are magic's way of stabilizing itself.

When too much latent energy gathers in one place, it stabilizes by forcing itself into the channel. In Sornieth's beginning, latent magic channeled using the resources found in abundance on the planet, creating channels for the first four elements. This also created the first four deities as conduits through which latent energy is consumed and channeled. As the third age progressed, new resources with which to create channels were made via cosmic warring. These became the next four deities. At the creation of the lightweaver and the eighth channel, nearly all of sornieth's latent energy had been consumed.

Casting: The second age

During the second age, Sornieth's magical energies were mostly stable. The planet's inhabitants were quick to discover that channeled magic was not only stable, but easy to control. This was the beginning of magical casting. In casting, a mage pulls magical energy from a specific channel through their body, a casting rune, or casting circle. All of these act in a way opposite to elemental spirits like the deities, separating magic from its channel to create a physical effect and latent magical energy. The latent energy produced is released into the atmosphere or the ground. Most all latent energy during the second age was inevitably drawn to the pillar where it would be rechanneled by the slumbring spirits and released.

This energy cycle continued for centuries of casters and casting. All the while, the amount of latent energy within the shield generated by the pillar stayed relatively low. This was until it was discovered that technological advancements powered by magic made much better use of latent energy than channeled. Latent generators which unchanneled energy far faster than the pillar could undo it became popular. At the same time, the pillar's barrier created a magical greenhouse effect that trapped the extra energy on the planet.

With so much latent magic concentrated in one place, the energy was forced to create new channels in order to balance. These new channels had to be created from new elements which did not exist on first age Sornieth - Non magical life in both its aspects, creation and destruction. Still this was not enough. There was still more than enough energy left to justify one more channel. Unfortunately all of the possible elements within Sornieth's greenhouse had been used up, forcing the remaining energy to channel into itself, creating an unnatural neutral channel.

The formation of the eleventh channel brought about the end of the second age, as the forming deity's energy simultaneously disrupted the worlds latent generators causing global meltdowns.

What are hatchlings in your clan expected to learn as they grow up? Who is expected to teach them, and how are they taught?

Have any of your dragons sought out "higher education" or devoted themselves to academic subjects?

Dragon Words

Hey everyone! I just posted a small list of some terms I use for talking about dragons, Sornieth as a setting, etc. over on my journal. Thought I'd toss a link up over here, rather than a direct crosspost, since I see myself editting and expanding on the glossary in the future and would rather keep it all nice and tidy over on my journal.

But go check it out! Entry should be publicly viewable. Link to the page right this way.

Are there any significant familiars in your clan? What are their stories?

If youhave Beastclan familiars, what exactly is their relationship with your dragons? If you have non-sentient familiars, what role do they play?

Wandering Diplomats

Most clans reach out to another clan at some point; it's the most legal way of gaining access to resources one doesn't otherwise have, if not necessarily the most efficient. Even in the absence of alliances, territories sometimes overlap and negotiations in general are not uncommon. If no one in your clan has a diplomatic bent, you may need to turn to the wandering diplomats.

The diplomats travel in groups of up to twenty but usually not more than a dozen, offering their services to those in need for wildly varying prices. Most of their assignments are short-term, a single negotiation or the writing of a letter on a clan leader's behalf, but some diplomats will sign on with a clan for a year or more and handle all relevant duties during that time. Many have a preference for shorter assignments to retain their mobility, and some never take longer contracts at all.

A band of diplomats is protected from the dangers and penalties that might befall a group of dragons without a clan, but in order to maintain this immunity an individual must take a certain number of assignments per year, or they're considered clanless in the eyes of the law; though of course whether anything is done about this varies from flight to flight. Longer contracts usually specify that the diplomat is part of the clan for the length of their tenure, sidestepping this issue.

No one is quite sure where the first few wandering diplomats were trained, but these days they pass on their knowledge to new members of their groups; a group of diplomats will usually share some practices and preferences that are not common to any other, and their standards may shift over time. Sometimes a group will disband for one reason or another, leaving those who want to continue in this line of work to find another band to travel with which may work differently than they do. A diplomat who takes a long contract may find that their group has left the area when their assignment is done and end up joining whichever one is nearby regardless of personality clashes. A few never remain with any one group for long, taking advantage of their legal status to travel alone most of the time, but this is rare; the law can't protect you from an angry roc.

The Laundromat

Some time ago, Tettix came up with Sockknitter, the son of Cashmere and Angora, the deity of Sock Flight, "the other other other other OTHER 12th flight". In June of last year, I took over custody of Sockknitter himself.

A white and blue dragon wearing a blue sweater

He is the patron of all exalted Tundras and okapi dragons. (You may read that as (exalted (Tundras and okapi dragons)) or (exalted Tundras) and (okapi dragons), as you prefer.) He has two disciples, at the moment: a Mirror in my lair and a Nocturne in someone else's. And I've actually kind of rolled him (and his home, the Laundromat) into my clan's lore: namely, the Solar Solar has set aside one of its artificial caverns to be the Laundromat, and the clan leadership doesn't interfere with Sockknitter or that cavern in exchange for Sockknitter not causing them problems or trying to convince anyone not to exalt dragons to the Lightweaver. (He says he is a lesser deity, and that Sock Flight is a subflight of Light Flight... or at least he has, since this compromise.)

If anyone in another clan would like to have disciples of Sockknitter, let me know :D

Oracle Pairs

Oracle pairs are a fixture in clans far from the sea or in which water dragons are not common. Composed of a pair or team of non water dragons with significant natural reserves, these units function as a water oracle would. The team usually consists of a Medium, a Diviner, and sometimes a Ward artist.

The Diviner handles the majority of an oracle's duties. Their jobs include reading fortunes and preforming predictions. They also interpret dreams and give advice. Diviner oracles or seers make strong advisers, but are usually hesitant to take action on their predictions as that job falls to the medium. A seer may also take on the duties of ward artist as well, although this is uncommon. The Diviner is considered the passive role in an oracle pair.

Medium serves as the active role of the pair. A Medium, or channel, 's main duty is to interact with spirits, elementals, and ghosts. Sornieth's magically charged lands tend to trap these entities in the physical plane. A channel may confer with them for advice on things unseen by those in the physical plane. Mediums are also able to influence things that Diviners can only foresee or interpret. They may banish nightmares and preform exorcisms of shade or of ghosts. A particularly powerful medium may even be able to read minds to a small extent. Medium is by far the more difficult of the two positions, and generally requires a more powerful mage.

Weather Witches

The weather witches are an organization based out of the Gladeveins, dedicated to magical weather control for the benefit of all dragonkind. Though they originated in Nature, they have smaller outposts in most flights, and take all those who wish to learn.

A dragon whose native magic is not naturally suited to weather control may be trained in Water, or may learn to adapt their existing skills to a new purpose. Dragons without any magical aptitude do occasionally join the order, as there is always a need for recordkeepers and negotiators. Some of the weather witches can be a bit…prickly.

Though the order’s original mission is specifically one of aid, the actual execution varies, especially in outposts further away from the main base. Some weather witches have been known to leave the order and use their training for more selfish purposes; the order prefers to mete out justice for this offense themselves.

Generally speaking, weather witches can be hired for a small fee either individually or as a group, to irrigate crops, drive a dangerous storm away from a flimsy settlement, move a becalmed ship—almost anything you might need. Despite the nature of this work they do not take kindly to being called mercenaries. For reasons unknown, despite the amount of work they do, the weather witches are not very well-known outside their flight of origin, and flights without an outpost tend to be wholly ignorant of them.

Occasionally a weather witch will leave the order, not for selfish reasons, but because of misgivings about how the mission is being handled. Exorbitant rates, accepting payment to control weather in a harmful manner, and neglect are all cited at various times. While many disgruntled witches have brought such things to the attention of the higher-ups, corruption runs deep and the witches of Nature don’t usually have the resources to root it out. Witches who have left the order for this reason tend to travel, offering their services wherever they are needed for small amounts of money or food; working exclusively for one dragon or clan runs counter to their principles.

WBW#1 - Let's get it started in here!

Welcome to the grand opening of Lore Rising @ Dreamwidth!

(no relation to Lore Rising @ Tumblr.)

So what's going on here?

This is a community for posting and talking about Flight Rising clanlore, worldbuilding, and RP. Tumblr was built for sharing art, and its interface can make carrying on person-to-person conversations cumbersome. Dreamwidth's threaded comments system is much better suited to casual conversations - it doesn't repost the entire contents of the conversation whenever you reply, comment threads can branch into multiple smaller conversations in a single space, and it's easier to track what other people are talking about and jump in wherever you see something interesting you'd like to add to.

My hope is that hosting a lore-share community on Dreamwidth will enable the exchange of ideas and collaborations such as alliances or lore hatchling adoptions between people who find it hard to get started on FR Tumblr - as well as those who are established on FR Tumblr, but would enjoy a change of atmosphere now and then!

How do I get started?

First, read our rules. There aren't many, don't worry.

You'll need a "journal" - DW's name for personal accounts - to start posting and commenting to this community. Once you've made a journal (all that's required is an email and a birthdate; once you get through step 1 and get your confirmation email, the rest of the setup process is optional), you'll need to join the community to be able to post and comment to it. From that page, you can also "subscribe" to the community, which will post all of its updates to your Reading Page along with any other journals or communities you've subscribed to (like following on Tumblr). If you want an extra level of notifications when LR updates, you can also "track" the community to receive emails whenever a new entry is posted.

Once you're logged into an account, a little bell icon will appear at the top of this and all posts. You can track the community from there - or, if you're just interested in a specific post, you can track all comments made to that one post! (You're set to receive emails about any comments to posts you make by default.)

If you're having trouble figuring out the bells and whistles of Dreamwidth, you can throw any questions at our DW Guide post. At some point there'll be some guides there for cool things you can do that aren't immediately obvious, but for now it's just a Q&A.

What can I expect to see here?

Every Wednesday and Saturday (EST timezone), there'll be a mod-posted World Building Wednesday/Weekend discussion post. Cribbed from the Tumblr meme, ours will be a little more specific - each WBW post will have a specific question, prompt, or cluster of related questions/prompts for people to answer about their own clan lore or interpretation of FR's site lore. From there, replying to others is strongly encouraged - ask questions, compliment things you sound cool,

If you have suggestions for other memes or activities, point yourself at the Mod Contact page - or start posting it yourself and see if it catches on!

Other than the WBW, LR content will be whatever members put up. We have a tagging system for the kinds of posts we expect to see most frequently:
clan lore - For information pertaining to your own dragons, clan, lair, or non-dragon characters. Can include static profiles and ongoing stories.
worldbuilding - For writing and fan-invented lore about the world of Flight Rising in general; creative work that other players can adopt and expand upon in their own lore.
discussion - Posts that put forward a question or prompt to be discussed and responded to in the comments.
interactive - Lore hatchling sales, RP solicitations, alliance invitations, or any other posts that invite other users to become involved in each others' storylines.
Any posts that fit any of these descriptions are strongly encouraged! Posts that don't fit these descriptions are also strongly encouraged, though they should relate to Flight Rising lore/RP/fanworks.

If you plan to post your own clan's lore here, or if you want to suggest a general tag, you can hit the Tag Request and have mods create a tag for you. Like on Tumblr, this allows you to filter the community to all the posts in a single tag.

I'M READY TO GET STARTED

AWESOME \o/

So with that, let's drop the first WBW prompt!

What's your clan's origin story? Who founded it? Where did its original members come from?

Do you have any clans or characters with a connection to or interest in the beginnings of the age of dragons? Do you have any headcanons about the early days of dragonkind?

Tag List + Tag Request

Tags on DW are used for organizational purposes - you can't blacklist them (to my knowledge, unless there's an extension out there for that), but you can view all posts within a single tag, making it easier to find old posts on specific subjects.

Only the admins of a community can create tags, but members can use any existing tags on their posts. Here's a list of the tags in use on Lore Rising, and what kinds of posts they're used for.

!mod post - Used by LR mods only, for announcements, organization posts, and other modly things.
!wbw - World Building Wednesday/World Building Weekend, a semi-weekly discussion meme posted by mods.

clan lore - For information pertaining to your own dragons, clan, lair, or non-dragon characters.

This community has a 1000-tag limit. What can we use the rest of those tags for?...how about tracking specific stories?

If you want a personal tag - either for all your works, or for a particular clan or storyline - you can request one here. It can be as serious or as silly as you like. Just post here with what you want the tag to be, and it'll get added!

p: solar solar[personal profile] cheyinka

Please be conscientious when requesting tags, and only request tags you intend to use. You can always request a general personal tag, and come back later and request another tag if one of your storylines takes off - even though 1000 seems like a high limit, let's avoid over-cluttering the tag page with unused tags!
